CD Review | The Mee Kats – All Dressed Up
Album | All Dressed Up
Artists | The Mee Kats
Label | Skip Records
The Mee Kats are a Rockabilly trio from County Durham in the North East of England made up of Colin Mee on lead vocals, rhythm guitar and drums; Tim Bloomer on guitar and Mandy Mee on Double bass. Mandy & Tim also provide the backing vocals.
Colin was previously the drummer in the Sure Shots, a band which made its mark on the Rockabilly scene in the 80’s and led to an appearance on Channel 4’s Saturday Night Live in 1986 performing his original composition ‘I’m On Fire’ – a version of which appears on this new album along with another Mee-penned number ‘Crazy Over You’
Mandy started out playing Double Bass with hillbilly trio The Smokey Mountain Boys, while Tim is a veteran of several North East bands. They have a devoted following as a live act in the UK and beyond, and this fast-moving collection of foot-tapping tracks will doubtless cement their reputation as one the best Rockabilly bands on the scene today.
The album was recorded in County Durham at the studio’s of Colin’s independent label Skip Records where the sound of fifties-style Rock & Roll is captured in crystal clear quality. It follows their earlier releases – a 2 sided 7″ vinyl 45rpm single “Rag Top Baby/Call My Name” and a 7 track CD called “Everybody’s Rockin…..” (2014).
The title track ‘All Dressed Up’ sets the pace, and its a staccato one, each song jumping with energy and a driving beat. It’s evident that they had a lot of fun making it, the tight sound and assured playing giving way to raucous harmonies from a trio clearly very comfortable playing together. ‘Crazy Over You’ is the stand out track, but the whole album maintains a feelgood atmosphere and frenetic rhythm.
Pure Rockabilly in authentic 50’s style.
